we sing the land alive

We sing the land alive wherever we travel
and for whoever we meet we tell the stories
for ours is the job of remembering and retelling
all the things we have learned by listening ourselves
to the blades of grass, the leaves on the trees
and the sounds of animals in the fields
as they call to each other in the waking of Spring
and cry out in the darkness of Winter.

We tell stories of the Ancient Ones
and how they came to these lands
and how they fought their battles
above our heads and alongside us
while we, the poets, sang the songs
to sustain them and please them
and please them we did
and go on trying to do
by singing the land alive,
telling the stories to whoever we meet,
for ours is the job of remembering and retelling
all the things we have learned by listening ourselves
to the sun, the moon, the sky and the sea
and the Star Mother and the Earth Father
and you, the noble patron with a golden coin.
